"The Fastest Production Car"
On that big list you'll see the Lamborghini Miura, the Countach, the Ferrari Daytona, the Gullwing Mercedes, Iso Grifo GL, Aston Martin DB4 GT..etc
You've now realized you'll need to spend at least 300,000$ just to get in the club. And on top of the eye watering cost of entry is also the parts availability and the astronomical price of parts themselves. What if I told you there's a little gem for less than 1/3 of the price and parts are a non-issue?
That car is the Jaguar XK-120.
Originally released in 1948, it was an immediate success with the rich and famous like Clark Gable but at less than half the price of the competition.
Let's look at the specs
ENGINE 3.4L DOHC INLINE-6 160-180HP
TRANSMISSION 4 Speed Manual
PRICE NEW 3950$
Let's put these numbers in perspective,
a late 40s V12 Ferrari 166S had 140hp,
an early 50s Aston Martin DB2 2.6L made 105hp
a Maserati A6 only made about 105hp
and all of these cars cost at least double the price.
The 120 came in 3 body styles. The roadster, the coupe and the Drophead. In 1953 the SE or M (as it was called in North America), came with more powerful engine. Our choice is the Roadster but every time I see a coupe, I can't help to think how pretty it is. Almost all parts are available and most importantly your local British mechanic is able to do all the work on it at a reasonable price.
And speaking of price, just like when it was released, it's still priced very well. Although prices have gone up in the last 5 years, you can still get a really nice car for 75,000$ USD. A quick note, early cars were bodied in aluminum but we suggest a steel car if you actually want to drive it a lot.
Now I know that 75,000 is a lot of money but we think this is one of the best ways to spend it....just look at this thing!
